Multiwell plates are very commonly used in the lab. They range from 6, 12, 24, 48, 96, 384, 1536 etc. They are used for cell culture, molecular biology experiments, and protein chemistry experiments. The multiwell plates used for cell culture have a special hydrophilic coating, this allows for easy attachment of the cells to the plastic surface. Some of the ways the multiwell plates are used is by adding reagents or cells into each well, and stack them on top of each other for convenience and for saving space. One of the problem associated with the stacking is that if you want to get a plate from the middle of the stack, usually you will have to disturb, move the other plates on top of it. This may cause unintended consequences such as dropping the other plates by accident, or simply disturbing the plates unnecessarily. For some of the experiments, cells after seeding into the well cannot be or should not be disturbed. This may effect their attachment, or growth dynamics.
